Start Your Engines ("Git 'er Done") May, 2008
Column by Randy Brown, President
We had a really fun 1st points race on May 4th.
It was a great marathon weekend of racing for Jim Bell, John Colosky, Orrin Sunde and me because we raced on Friday & Saturday down at Ingalls, Indiana at the QSAC NCS race and then raced in Lansing all day Sunday.
Some of you will recall we voted to give out special prizes at each GLQSR's points races for things not directly related to where you finish a race. Orrin won A Chevy Racing Jacket as the Die Hard Racer of the day. And Dwane Dyer got a GLQSR'S hat for driving the longest distance (110 miles, one way). Tim Bloom was a close second at 108 miles!! And this all happened at the driver's meeting before anyone started a race! I think the drivers enjoyed these awards. We'll pick something else at the next points race to base the awards on.
We started out the 1st points race with computer problems, What's new??? We had 6 Sportsman, 3 Trucks, 2 Grand Nationals and 1 Sprinter.
We had some really great races all day long. The Sportsman "A" Main started with Stan Smith on the pole and he quickly pulled away from the pack just like he did in his 2 heat races. It sure looked like Stan was going to be the man to beat but then Phil Custance came out of nowhere to take the lead. In the mean time, Tom Franks was pile driving his way to front!
(Tom's a good driver, just had a small-dog fight back in the pits that maybe contributed to his aggressive driving.) Stan had mechanical problem and Joe Duke came home as the eventual winner with Tom in 2nd on the same lap. It was a fun race to watch and for me to call over the P.A.!
The Trucks and the Grand Nationals ran together per our Annual Meeting vote with points being awarded just like they finished with each driver's points going towards the class he signed up for that day. So we had to change Jim's initial points spreadsheet a little to reflect this new rule.
See you at the Tri-State and our next points race on SATURDAY, June 14th. Don't forget, both the Tri-State and our 2nd points race are on SATURDAYS, NOT Sundays.
